Kauri leaves pendant Kauri are considered a taonga (treasure) by many New Zealanders, particularly tangata whenua, who see the health of kauri as a sign of general well being of the ngahere (forest) and the people. Kauri is one of the longest-living tree species in the world, as well as the largest. They are most commonly found in the northern regions of Aotearoa's Te Ika-a-Māui (North Island).
